Structure

The structure of a dissertation is very important and has to be decided right at the beginning. As the document advances, making structural changes can be very tricky. The logical flow of thought guides the structure of the document. We need to be careful right from the Title page, Table of Contents, Formal Notices, Abstract, and Introduction and so on.

Content

A dissertation is a piece of academic work. It has to have certain amount of originality and at the same time demonstrate the deep research that has gone into it. Understanding of issues, studies on theoretical aspects, analysis, evaluation and presentation of logical thought is important from a content point of view. It is important that the intellectual achievement is reflected in the content.

Language style

Dissertation writing is serious academic writing; hence use of correct language style is important. The sentences should be concise and clear. Colloquialism and phrasal verbs is best avoided.

Paragraphs should flow logically and each paragraph is best kept short with four to five sentences.  Figures should be in conjunction with the text and have a reference. It is good practice to provide a list of figures in the table of contents.
Referencing

It is important and ethical to acknowledge the sources of work. It will also avoid accusations of plagiarism. Extensive referencing provides the impression of wide research and helps as evidence to defend one’s argument.

Final Tips

The document needs to be proof-read thoroughly to avoid errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is a good idea to get the document reviewed by your friend. It is always advisable to develop the bibliography as you progress with your writing.
